How to Sign Your Montana Car Title

How to Sign Your Montana Car Title

Published on 8/13/2026

Montana requires the owner's signature on a title transfer to be notarised, and the certificate carries a dedicated notary band beneath the seller's line to record it.

The whole thing takes half a minute when you know where to look. When you don't, it costs you a duplicate title and a fortnight. Here's the short version.

The highlighted bar is where your signature goes. The arrow points to it. Nothing else on the page needs your handwriting unless the form asks for it by name.

Where to sign on your Montana title

Middle-left of the certificate, in the band labelled Seller Completes in Ink down the left margin. The highlighted bar covers the Signature of Owner or Agent of Owner (Transferor) line.

Notarisation required. Keep the pen in your pocket until a notary public is watching. What the notary attests to is the act of signing, not the signature itself, so a title you signed at the kitchen table cannot be notarised afterwards. Take the blank title and government-issued photo ID to a bank, a credit union or a shipping store — most will notarise on the spot.

Three rules that keep a title valid

  1. Use the name printed on the certificate. The signature has to match the registered owner exactly, character for character. If the title carries a suffix or a middle initial, include it.
  2. Keep every other line blank. The buyer's fields, the dealer reassignment rows and the lienholder section are not yours to complete, even as a favour. A seller's handwriting in a buyer's box is treated as tampering.
  3. Check first, sign second. We'd rather answer a thirty-second question than help you order a duplicate. {{TRACKWALA_PHONE}} gets you a human.

In ink, in front of a notary, and all owners sign

Three constraints stack up on this line. The left margin says seller completes in ink — no pencil. The band below is a notary section with fields for state, county, date and commission expiry. And the text above the line says all owners must sign. Get every owner to the same notary at the same time if you can; if you can't, each signature needs its own acknowledgement.

What voids a Montana title

The Montana Motor Vehicle Division rejects titles for the same handful of reasons, year in and year out:

  • Correction fluid, correction tape, or an eraser.
  • A crossed-out word, even where the correction is obviously right.
  • A signature in the wrong assignment block, which invalidates everything below it.
  • Filling in buyer fields as a courtesy. Leave them empty.
  • Non-standard ink. Blue or black only.

None of these are recoverable with a pen. Every one of them means a duplicate title application.

Before you send your title to TRACKWALA

Run through this list before the document goes in an envelope:

  • Signature matches the registered owner exactly.
  • Odometer entered in whole miles.
  • Sale date is accurate, not backdated.
  • No stray marks anywhere else on the document.
  • Both sides photographed before the title leaves your hands.

That last point is the one people skip and later wish they hadn't. A photo of the completed assignment is the only proof you have of what you handed over and when.

Montana title questions we get asked

Montana asks whether I'm signing for a business. Where does that go?

The printed name line beside your signature has to match the signature, including any business capacity you're signing in.

Can someone else sign on my behalf?

Only with a properly executed power of attorney, and some states have their own vehicle-specific POA form. Send us the details before you arrange anything.

Does the buyer sign at the same time?

Usually yes, but the seller's section has to be complete first. Several states print that instruction directly on the form.
